The Fact of the Matter Is, We Know Too Much

Fact of the Matter
The Fact of the Matter Is, We Know Too Much

Hoalah - You’ve probably heard the phrase, The more you know, the more you know how much you don’t know. This is particularly true when it comes to technological advances that continue to take place at an exponential rate. Information on the web and social media can be staggering in its amount, and it becomes harder and harder to keep up with everything that we might need to know as employees and entrepreneurs.

What if your biggest problem is knowing too much?

As a student at Washington State University pursuing a career in journalism, I’ve come to realize how much research is needed for any story. For example, if you want to write about certain legislation that affects homeless individuals and you only have 15 minutes before your deadline – you’re going to need to know something about federal housing policy! As someone who was in high school just five years ago, I can’t even imagine what this must be like with an ever-expanding amount of information available on our phones or computers. The fact of the matter is we know too much and some people are willing to do anything not to have this knowledge. One day it may be seen as illegal to use internet search engines without government permission. A few weeks ago I stumbled across a post by Cenk Uygur where he asked What happens when there is no truth?

Then Cenk says If there is no truth then all you have left is power because the power has to go somewhere. And so they choose themselves over you every time because they believe they know better than you what’s good for you. So here comes Joe Stalin and Mao Zedong out of the past into our future again! It happened before, it will happen again...except this time those in charge are technocrats, managers rather than ideologues.

How do you feel about knowing too much?

Sometimes it feels like we know too much. That it would be easier to go back in time where we didn't have information at our fingertips and didn't need to process through so many things. But even though there is no going back, I don't think that knowing so much is a bad thing at all. In fact, I think that it makes us better people and enables us to do what we do.

I guess you could say that knowing this one fact of the matter made me feel better about everything else too!

Do you have a one fact of life that makes you feel like all other facts aren't as bad? Let us know in your comments!

Have an opinion on whether it's possible to learn too much information? Tell us why in your comment.

Not sure if you should be worried about learning too much or not? Tell us why not! We need to know these things because they make us more aware of what is happening around us. And maybe then we can do something about it!

What we can learn from the dark side of knowledge.

Before now, knowledge was power and keeping something from someone meant that you had control over them. The fact of the matter is that we know too much. Consider what happens to a child who watches his parents fight as they age and die. They're left with scars and raw emotions that they may never fully comprehend. Knowledge at all costs has consequences, but we can't stop being informed nor should we ignore information. We need to find a balance in order to make this world better for future generations. There are pros and cons to each side of the argument so it's up to us to decide how far we want or don't want society to advance. If we let people do whatever they want without any regulation, then there will be anarchy; however, if we regulate everything then there will be no freedom.

So what now?

The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of resources out there to help you with almost anything you need. There's a lot to learn and a ton to get done, but know that we're all in this together and learning as we go. My only piece of advice is to not give up when things get hard--keep going! No matter what it is you want to do or become, chances are someone else has done it before you and they wrote about it so that one day you would be able to have an easier time getting started! You'll find that most people are excited to see others succeed and will be happy to offer advice or tips on how they did it. However, if you don't get what you need from the internet (or whatever resource) don't hesitate to reach out! Your parents, siblings, friends, professors: all of them may know more than you think. And lastly: keep your chin up and remember that success takes work but it also takes patience and perseverance too.
