10 Mysterious Facts About the World You Didn't Know

Facts - The world has some amazing mysteries that most people don’t know about. These mysterious facts can include anything from bizarre events to strange places to peculiar animals. There are hundreds of such facts, and here are ten of the most interesting ones. If you want to learn more, check out the links at the end of this article for further reading.

1) Earth is round

The world is round and not flat, but for centuries people had trouble wrapping their heads around that. To prove to people that the earth is round, there's one mysterious fact about world you didn't know you need to look at: Polaris. Scientists have discovered that stars are all gradually changing position in relation to each other due to Earth's rotation and it causes our sky to move from day-to-day. As a result, Polaris is situated as less of a star and more of a constellation year-round because it never changes position! So while we can never see it travel around the earth's circumference due to its height in relation with Earth, instead it remains fixed in our sky which proves we're on a ball shape.

2) The US is bigger than Europe

The US is bigger than Europe, but did you know that there are only 24 time zones in the world? There's a lot more to know about this Earth we call home. The white stuff you see up there isn't always snow. For example, it might be salt on sidewalks, sandstorms or volcanic ash. If it rains at a rate of 12 inches an hour and your rain gauge can measure up to 6 inches, how many minutes will it take for the gauge to overflow? The answer is 2 hours - enough time for water pressure to increase substantially. Want another cool question? Does a cow have four stomachs? One of these questions will probably surprise you.

3) Antarctica isn’t a country but its own continent

Contrary to popular belief, Antarctica is not a country. It is a continent that includes a lot of mysterious facts about world. To name a few: it’s home to the coldest temperature on Earth, the driest place on Earth, and many animal species found nowhere else on Earth. There are also natural resources in Antarctica like coal, iron ore, gold, diamonds and zinc

4) The biggest volcano in the solar system exists on Mars

At more than 12 kilometers tall, Olympus Mons on Mars is not only the biggest volcano in our solar system, but also a shield volcano that spans over 600 kilometers. That makes it as wide as Mount Everest is tall, and 10 times taller than most other volcanoes. It was formed because of a hot mantle plume that impacted on the surface of Mars long ago.

5) Pluto isn’t a planet anymore

In 2006, it was announced that Pluto no longer qualified as a planet. Due to its small size, in relation to other planets in our solar system, astronomers decided it had to be classified as a dwarf planet. Now there are 8 planets in our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune).

6) Jupiter can be seen from Earth with the naked eye

We all know that Jupiter is a big, gas giant planet. It has a very long history and it's been studied since the 1600s by modern astronomers and scientists. What many people don't know is that you can actually see Jupiter from Earth with your naked eye. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has tried to point out constellations in the night sky, as it's one of five planets that can be seen without any type of special telescope or aid.

7) There are only four countries that cross more than one time zone

A simple answer for why we have time zones is that it's what people agreed on. But, in reality, there are a few more mysterious facts about world to know and to ponder over. One thing you may not know is that there are only four countries in the world that cross more than one time zone: Egypt, France, India, and Afghanistan.

8) A person has never been to space alone (if you don’t count robots!)

We all know that Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon in 1969. However, he wasn’t alone. He had Buzz Aldrin with him, and they were both aboard a big white space module called Eagle. The idea behind sending two people together on a solo mission was to make sure that if one died during the exploration, then at least one would be alive to carry on and bring back more information about our neighbouring planet.

9) Humans aren’t great at determining distances.

Our inability to assess distance is inversely proportional to our overestimation of time. Researchers have found that when people estimate what time it will be one minute into the future, they overestimate it by 5-20%. However, when estimating distances in meters, they underestimate it by 5-10%. For example, when trying to accurately estimate a car’s location from 250 meters away on a busy road, humans are likely to estimate that the car is five meters away from where it actually is. So if you’re dealing with people who are making scheduling mistakes because they can’t accurately assess how long things take or how far things are from each other, use this as an icebreaker.

10) 25 years ago we didn’t know how many different types of galaxies there were in our universe.

There are three main types of galaxies: spiral, elliptical, and irregular. We now know that there are seven different types of these galaxies that were only recently discovered. Before we knew about these mysterious facts about world, scientists had a pretty good understanding of how many galaxies there were in our universe, but things got really interesting when they started using a new type of telescope called the WISE satellite. It was able to take images of outer space on a much wider scale than other telescopes and show us that our perception on what is out there was completely off-base.
